Hi, Sometime you can get very lucky on Freecen, it`s worth checking out as you can narrow down your details and then do a more direct search on scotlands people for the original returns, which works out a lot cheaper. H. |

Have you tried rootsweb.com and then look thru the message board or family trees, you can put in a google search for the part of Scotland your interested in. Most areas have some kind of site. Genuki.org.uk have a lot of Scottish info. Censusfinder.com is another one, although limited Lyn |

There are lots of Family history societies in Scotland and all will help you via email - ok, it will cost for searches but they do a discount for members. If you are researching people in Aberdeen-shire then look on ANESFHS then MI - there are over 80 cemeteries online and you can look up the surnames to see if any of yours are there. The booklets give full details of the listings and can be bought for only £2.25 each - that said, I have a lot of the booklets and will look for you if you give me a few clues! The Fraserburgh Yahoo Group are excellent as well, but you need to have links in the area. My husband's father was born and brought up there and I have added considerably to my tree since joining them. Today one of their members posted a message about the Fraserburgh Registrars Office - they have registers of all the burials in the local churchyard, over 70,000 names!, and providing you have name and date of death they will search and give you location of lair and all buried there (search costs £10 per hour). Now if Fraserburgh do this then I bet lots of others do as well. Libraries - well worth a look. I lived in Inverness for 35 years and only found out last month that the library has a room full of books and parish records for the whole of the Highlands. But for sitting in front of a computer - Scotlands people is excellent! There are ways to get the most out of your searches as well but I reckon I've rabbited on enough for now! Good luck all of you, Christine xx |

Couldn't find a thread for Scotland so thought I'd better add one because I'm still stuck. Scotlandspeople is a very good site although it can work out quite expensive if like me you are researching common names like Collins and Brown. Does anyone have any other good sites for Scotland or research ideas for those of us who don't live in Scotland please? |
