Australian Census Records

I'm not sure if this is the board to pose this question, but i hope it is. I know that Australia has its own census, but how far back do they go and is it possible to view them like we do with British and American ones? How would one see them and get info required from them for family search? Any help here would be very much appreciated. Kindest regards Theresa

Theresa, Unfortunately, ours are shredded after each census. Don't ask me why. Some areas have very old 'musters' you can see. It's best to check with the Family History centre in the area you want. A lot are on the web. Just google genealogy or history and the name of the place. If you can't find it that way, google the place and 'council' or library, something that wil get you the council and contact them. Remember some towns have councils with a different name. I know Warialda is Gwydir Council, etc. Hope that helpls.

Theresa, I should have asked. Who are you looking for? I'm not good at recent ones as I can't get out easily, but I think I've searched most of Qld and NSW from the first fleet on. Put some details on here or email me direct.

There is actually one Australian census. It is the 1828 census and somewhere you can get actual copies of it. There are also books where it has been transcribed. The Society of Australian Geneologists probably have copies of the originals but I don't know where else you can look. But at least you know now to look. Toni

NSW has the 1828 - I can search this census at the National Library if needed. I visit there about once a fortnight. Danielle

Hi Elizabeth, The completed Australian census forms are shredded once the information has been transferred to computer. No names are retained as they are only used to make sure that each individual has actually completed a form. The data is retained but contains no information that would allow an individual to be identified. After all a census is not really about listing every individual's name, address, age etc. It's about providing data to allow governments to provide services more efficiently. We are just lucky that we have the old English, US and Canadian ones etc still available. Paul
