As all the children were born after 1841, Richard and Mary may well not have been married until after 1841 so we are looking for Richard Lawrence aged 20 (they rounded down to nearest mulitple of 5) and Mary surname unknown aged 15, both born Shoreditch.

looking at the 1851 census Mary Lawrence abt 1823 and Richd Lawrence abt 1819 may not have been together/married in 1841? Roy

There are a good few Essex born Richard Lawrences on the 1841 index- some around the right time - think you might have to get his marriage cert and try to track him down via his father's name Carole

I think you are right will apply for marriage cert and take it from there. It is always clearer when you thrash it out with others thanks Gwen

I have just found the marriage reference and Mary's maiden name so thanks again for all your input. Gwen

Caz

Caz Report 24 Jun 2006 21:10

Does that mean you already knew Mary's maiden name to be sure you have the right one on the marriage index? Carole

I looked on the family search org and found a Richard Lawrence and Mary A with a child named Richard then checked the 1861 census and mother is shown as Mary Ann. I also found a marriage for them in 1841 and her surname is shown as Marchant, I did not know this before. So I hope I have the right one. I am in the middle of double checking everything just to make sure. thanks Gwen

Gwen If I were you I'd get one of the children's births certs first to be sure of the mother's maiden name. Then you'll be sure you're getting the right marriage cert. No I don't have shares in the GRO! LOL : -) Carole

That might be a good idea as the marriage I have found is in Bethnal Green I know it is a the crow flys so to speak but they are living in Shoreditch on all the census returns. I surpose the parents could have lived in Bethnal Green. Any way I will apply for childs birth cert to ensure I have the right one. I am not used to searching for the more common surname so I get cross. It was a piece of cake researching my husbands family as the name is unusual I've certainly been spoilt. I am going to call it a day. Thanks for your help.Gwen

I'd go for Read Lawrences birth cert (unusual name) - have had a quick look at the transcribed indexes - can't see him - you might have to trawl through the actual images (good news!) Good luck Carole

His name is actually Richard it was transcribed wrong but will apply for his cert, thanks Gwen
