I have a marriage cert. (1903) I can trace, in the censuses, the brides family back to 1841. I can find the groom in 1901 only. Where am I going wrong?

No luuck with the Golightly's (bro& sis) both born Allendale c.1843&51 respectively, in Cumberland in 1891, no Alfred. But found a birth reg for an Alfred Armstrong dec.1880 .in the Hexham reg. district, the only other is Robert Alfred, b.1875. How can I pick the most likely????????

Deb Report 24 Jun 2006 22:26

Hi Mick It's a tricky one!!!! I do think it's strange that in the 1881 -1891 there is a Robert Alfred Armstrong but he is not in the 1901 and in the 1901 there is a Alfred Armstrong but he is not in the 1881/1891. Did you take on board what Heather said that he could be over the boarder in Scotland. You could put a request on the records office board for a Scottish Look-up if you do not have access to these records. Anyway, let us no how you get on. Deb

I hope that I will be pardoned for raising this again, but I am completely lost. As we established before , there are two possibilities for Alfred.. I am sure that I can discount the 1880 one. Robert Alfred ,1875 seemed to fit the bill. Followed him back through the censi. 1891. servant. 15yrs. Acomb Northumberland. 1881 living with mother. 5yrs Mothers name Ann.Widow aged 42. Coalcleugh. Allendale. 1871 Ann. Widow 32yrs b. 1839, Allendale. 1861Ann 22yrs Husband William, b. 1827 Allendale I'm fairly sure of the family. At this stage I thought Oh FIG, and started to search for Alfreds death He died in abt.1947, in Crawcrook CoDurham. I have checked the register from 1945 to 1950 and can find no poss entry for either Alfred Armstrong or Robert Alfred Armstrong. He must be about somewhere, but where?
