From the website: h. - [1] heir; [2] husband; [3] hecto-; [4] horse; [5] hot; [6] hour(s) t. - ton(s); tonne(s).. y. - [1] young; [2] years. Y. - Yeomanry So.. one of my ancestors may have been a horse, or just hot :) Another was a bit hefty (wonder how many tonnes he was) Will have a search around and see if I can sort. Bex |

Well I havent looked at the census page you found but if there are a number of kids with this next to them, it doesnt seem likely it means they are all new born when the enumerator called, does it? Is it some sort of home or hospital? |

I've got a 'h' abbreviation on a marriage in the parish register, ie, 'Joe Bloggs, h., & Mary Dooda'. So the 'h' in this case couldn't stand for hours. Have also got the abbreviations 'y' and 't' after the husbands' name in marriages. Will have a look at that site you mentioned. Bex x |

Are you sure, June? Who are the people in Salford? (not that I'll be replying, because I'm just going out!) Merry |

Thanks Georgina. Just found a brilliant site, Gendocs. Amongst other meanings `hours` is one given for `h` , so the children must have been new born.. I`m going to bookmark the site as it`s looks so useful. Jay. |

Uniquely to the 1841 census, instead of naming the birth location, the question was simply asked whether the person was born in or out of the county of residence. Hence the answer 'Y' or 'N' (not 'h'!), for 'yes' or 'no'. |

June you need to give us more info so we can check the census image ourselves. The reference number you have supplied is incomplete. Georgina |

Can anyone tell me what is the meaning of what looks like an `h` next to just some of the children rather than all that appear on a page of the 1841 census. Is it number of hours old ? HO 107/ 586 /2 ( Salford ) shows it . Jay. Thanks Paul, The `h` isn`t in that column , but in the one where they wrote occupation etc. Jay. |
