Does anyone know how soon after an illigitimate birth(abt.1819),there would be such an order? Is it possible it could be a couple of years after? Fran |

I guess it would be as late as it took to get done. I have a child born in Tingwewick, baptused ''about three years'' later ''mother's present residence unknown'' - but her name and occuption were recorded. There were no other instances of his surname in that village. (I reckoned that was a reinforced concrete wall.) Some years later he married, and was settled, in Wigginton (Oxon) several miles away - a village with lots of people with the same surname including one woman who's of an age that she could be his mother. Presumably it took Tingewick a while to work out which village should be bearing the cost of this person - at least three years, anyway. Maybe the alleged father was effective in being elusive! Fran I have quite a few in my family around about that time (oh, the shame of it) Mine were done pretty quickly - child born and baptised in the Workhouse and bastardy order taken out the following week by the Workhouse Master. (I only know they were baptised in the Workhouse, because all the illegitimate baptisms appear together in the Parish Register - guess the Vicar had a special day devoted to the Workhouse!) OC |

Thanks O.C. I think I will have to try and find the baptismal record first, which I presume will give the name of the mother and then I can decide if the order I have found is the correct one. This isn't my family,so I do not hang my head! Honest! Fran |
