Please can anybody help me with this problem. My ggg grandfather Robert Paramore was born c1811, on the 1851 and 1861 he says was born South Molton, Devon. He is not on the IGI, Suzanne kindly looked up the parish records but he wasn't there either, my parents today have gone to the records office in Devon (whilst there on holiday!) but have found nothing, I'm a little unsure of where I can go to next, is there any kind soul out there who could suggest anything. Many thanks Michelle:( |

Hi Michelle - Is Robert's mother alive (and can you find her) for the 1851 census? If so, you might see where she was born and look in that parish for his baptism. From what I understand, it was not uncommon for women to 'go home to mother' for the birth of their first baby, and then go back to rejoin their husbands. If Robert grew up in South Molton, he may have just assumed that he was born there. Good luck - Tim |

Hi again – I found these names in South Molton for 1851 – they’re old enough to be Robert’s parents: Catherine Paramore abt 1783 Winkleigh, Devon, England Wife South Molton Devon Joshua Paramore abt 1784 South Molton, Devon, England Head South Molton Devon Margaret Paramore abt 1781 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Pauper South Molton Devon Catherine and Joshua are husband and wife (same couple Maureen found in 1841), while Margaret is in the Union Workhouse. Are any of these names familiar (e.g., given to Robert’s children or grandchildren)? If so, you might try looking in Winkleigh or Birmingham for baptismal records (hopefully Winkleigh, as there is presumably only one parish there). Tim |
