That's one thing that annoys me about Ancestry. You have to put in the first three letters of the name, otherwise wildcards won't work.

Elaine - I've tried using using wildcards in the surname on Ancestry, but it always claims that there are too many returns (or something like that). And I know that sometimes it can't be true, since it works if I leave the surname field blank altogether. Think I'll test it out again (and it will probably work for me this time!). Tim

Just for future reference I searched on William and Clay*, born in Essex. Will then pick up any mis-spellings of Clayden

Am I blind or can anyone assist please?
