I have a John Cooper born according to the census' in 1794 or 1796 in Carshalton Surrey, he married Elizabeth Strong on the 06 Jan 1817, and I have all their children. I have no idea about the parents of John Cooper or Elizabeth Strong. I found today on the IGI a baptism of a John Cooper in 1795 in Carshalton, Surrey. Could this be the one?? Would anyone else trust this or could there be other John Coopers baptised in Carshalton surrey and not listed on the IGI??? Common name isn't it?!!

It looks ok to me. It is extracted from records, and not member submitted, which can be dodgy. All the children of John Cooper and Elizabeth are: John Cooper bapt 31 May 1795 James Cooper bapt 5 Feb 1797 Charlotte Cooper bapt 16 Sept 1798 Dianne xx

With the year and the date matching it's a strong possibility. Is the IGI record an extract from the church record or a member submission? UPDATE: OK, Dianne got the first!

You'll probably never be 100% certain - but life's like that. You just need to make sure you've made a note of where you got the info from (I usually note the IGI batch number) so that you can retrace steps if necessary. Christine

Cheers christine, I hate pre 1837, I know that 1837 onwards is not exactly a walk in the park and I have hit brick walls right left and centre, but I love having a certificate on file to prove that the relative is definately mine! will do as you suggest and make a note of the batch no Fuzzy xx
