I have been trying to trace a Dinah Mayhew married to John Murray (born on the 6th march 1797). I know they married on the 05 august 1821 and I have traced his family back another generation, but not hers. I entered her name into Ancestry 1841 census and got nothing. I tried one of the children names and got in the same house a Dianna Muray born 1815, thinking here we go another mistranscription by ancestry I looked at the image, it does indeed say Dianna Muray aged 26, most of the children I have are there the eldest is 17. So as we know the ages are often out, and in this case way out, no way could she have been born in 1815 if she were married in 1821, but what worried me was the mistake on the actual census, how many names are entered incorrectly I wonder? It says born out of county, still no idea where she was born!! Has anyone else had a name incorrectly entered?

Yes, I found an Elizabeth entered as Ann on the actual census. I only found her by looking for her children instead. Lynn

OMG,Fuzzy, millions of them, thats part of the game! Always try entering just a first name and birth date and place, things like that. I still end up having to beg Merry to look for me if I cant see them. I think my best ones have been Charlotte Steers transcribed Charlotte Meins. And a beauty a couple of weeks ago, a Phoebe Olver transcribed Phoebe Chow. BTW, make a correction on ancestry - if we all keep correcting them then one day perhaps others wont have the same probs.

hiya, dont forget on the 1841 cen, ages were rounded down to nearest, age The ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Therefore, someone who was actually 24 years would have their age listed as 20, and someone who was actually 27 years old would have their age listed as 25. HTH Julie

Hiya Dark Secret, yes I was aware of the age being rounded up and down by 5 years, but this would have been about 15 years!!! which is why I was so shocked! Fuzzy x

If you go to her name you will see on the right hand side of the page Corrections and comments. Click on that. It will ask you the 'given name' - that is the right one! Fill that in and underneath you have to put a comment - I always put, something like, On the census image this is clearly xxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi heather, think you misunderstood, or more than likely me not putting it very clearly, just for once it is the image that is wrong, ancestry have transcribed what is on the image correctly, but I know for sure that what is on the image is incorrect. I have taken a note of what you siad for future reference, thanks honey x

Fuzzy As relationships are not given on the 1841 census, she could be his sister, his sister in law... OC

Hi olde crone, Definately not his sister, but didn't think of a sister-in-law mmmmm, that is a possibility....Still dont know where the blasted woman came from, and she not on the 1851, they sure don't like to make it easy for us do they?!! Fuzzy x

hi Heather, It is the second one I have had where the image isn't right, I have had a head of house transcribed by ancestry as Jane, at first i thought the husband had died then realised that there was a wife called Ellen, I looked at the image and it definately says Jane, but she is down as male and a printer. Have since got a marriage cert for their daughter and it should have said James!! I suppose mistakes happen, but b****y hell this is hard enough without them LOL!!! Fuzzy xx
