The National Archives web-site have a medal card for my 2xgrandfather. Before I pay and download the card, can anyone tell me what kind information you get from these? Thanks, Karen. |

Karen, You'll get his regiment, regiment number, rank, where he served(theatre of war), the medal awarded and the date he was discharged or killed in action. patricia |

Karen, I know it's disappointing. I wanted to find the date and place of birth for my grandad but no such luck. I did get a picture of him in the local newspaper (faded but something tangible at least). Maybe there was a photo of him because he was one of the many sons and son-in-laws of my gt grandmother serving in the army in 1915. You could try the archives of the local paper if you know where he lived. Patricia |

Hi Karen, Try this link for an excellent guide to how to interpret the information on medal cards - http://www(.)1914-1918(.)net/mics(.)htm (Remove the brackets around the dots) The whole site is an excellent source of information for people whose ancestors fought in WW1. Regards, Cherie |

Cherie You only have to worry about URLs when there's a word starting CO... That includes not only the two common endings, but Cornwall, Colorado, Cooperative... http://www.1914-1918.net/mics.htm Christine |

Chris - thanks for the info - I've never been sure about when to use brackets. Karen - hope you found it useful. Regards again, Cherie |
