Merry, Many thanks for looking, I never really thought of there not being a DC, but how barbaric. Surely it must have been witnessed by someone who could have verified it was him as his wife was informed, its such a shame that some people can quite literally disappear with no trace. Many thanks again. Sarah |

Christine, Its so frustrating isn't it? I'm not really sure where I should be looking, naval related or just plain overseas, we keep getting little snippets that seem to be piecing it together slowly and we're getting a picture of what happened. We're thinking about driving up to Hull and physically forcing this poor lady to find her box of goodies as it sounds like theres something concrete there. Must be patient. Many thanks again for your help. Sarah |

I've checked all the overseas sections on Family Relatives that cover the years you mention, but there's no sign of him. Sometimes if no body was recovered a death cert was not issued..... Merry |

Christine, Were you able to track down a death certificate in Romania? Just wondering if it is possible to get these things if they are registered abroad? Sarah |

Many thanks to you both for replying and I am very grateful for any help. His name was Edgar Tharme born 1893 so we think he would have been around 35 to 40 ish when he died. The family were living in Ryde, IOW which threw us a bit as we were concentrating all our searching there, but it appears he may have worked away. Many thanks again. Sarah |

I've access to Family Relatives and the overseas stuff is free to search on there. Do you want to give me his name and rough age? Merry |

Would be grateful for some advice on this one please, been hitting a brick wall for months. Trying to trace MILs Grandads death. We were told he died young in an accident when his children were still young. She has paid for a search at GRO for the years we narrowed it down to being 1928 (birth of last child) and 1934 (his wifes second marriage). This came up with nothing. She has now managed to trace one of his daughters who is still living and it appears he fell into the well of a dredger, as she remembers it was abroad possibly Germany. She didn't want to give too much away without checking her facts, she believes she has a document in a box which will give us more details. In the meantime, whilst shes looking for it (which I hope is quick) it seems to me that it now looks like he died abroad which was why his death wasn't registered here. Any ideas on how I would find this. Have looked on 1837 and it seems the overseas deaths are 1966 - 1984 and I don't have a card to search anyway. Surely, if his death was abroad it must still have been registered in England somewhere? We did think it could have been Naval related at first, but from his records he was invalided out and couldn't find a reference on the Naval deaths either. The relative says his body probably wasn't returned as there wasn't much left. MIL wanted to visit his grave which is what set us off and it doesn't look like this will happen. Anybody any ideas as to whether 'dredging' would be done by the Navy ? Or just any clues as to where I can look basically. Many thanks in advance and apologies for waffling. Sarah |
