I can’t find Malcolm Bewick on any census before 1871, but I can find a Martin Bewick. Malcolm was born abt 1844 in Sunderland, his parents were Thomas Bewick and Mary Ann Couborough. On the 1871 Malcolm and his wife Isabella (Gray) are living in Easington/Seaham, their first child was born in 1872. Also living with them is Malcolm’s father, Thomas. On Malcolms marriage and death certs his name is Malcolm, from 1871 on, his name is Malcolm…. I can’t find him before 1871, but I have this from the 1851 for Malcolm’s father Thomas… Charles Bewick abt 1837 Sunderland, Durham, England Son Sunderland Durham Elizabeth Bewick abt 1843 Sunderland, Durham, England Daughter Sunderland Durham Martin Bewick abt 1845 Sunderland, Durham, England Son Sunderland Durham Mary Bewick abt 1812 Sunderland, Durham, England Wife Sunderland Durham Thomas Bewick abt 1812 South Shields, Durham, England Head Sunderland Durham The age and birthplace of the parents is correct... Martin is 1845, I have Malcolm at 1844, close enough. In 1861 Thomas is with wife Mary and father in law Malcolm Coubrough.... possibly Malcolm jnr was named for Malcolm snr. As Malcolm is a fairly unusual first name, I searched Ancestry 1851 & 1861 without a surname, but with birth year and place and can't come up with another Malcolm who could be mine! So, d'ya think I can claim Martin????? Thanks! Brenda

You've looked at the images all along? I'd be inclined to aquire him, but with a warning to myself that I might have to let him go! Chrisitne

I would vote to claim him, Brenda. I just had a quick look at FreeBMD and there is no Martin born Sunderland between 1842-1846, but there is a Malcolm. Margaret

Not to throw a spanner in the works, but Malcolm is a scottish name, isnt it. Is there any chance the grandparents or relatives are scottish and he is over the boarder?

Blimey, just realised you have his wife as Isabella - from a marriage cert? - then looks a dead cert to me aswell. (With dad living with them)

Yup, I think the likely hood of him being mine is pretty high, but you just never know what might turn up do you? I’m glad I’ve found *something* about him, I though it would be highly unusual if he turned out to be an only child. Heather, you’re right on both counts… I have the Malcolm/Isabella marriage cert, and Thomas Bewicks wife, Mary Ann Coubrough’s father (also Malcolm) is listed as being born in Scotland. I still can’t see getting Martin from Malcolm… it’s not that similar no matter how bad your handwriting!! And I’m still looking for Martin/Malcolm on the 1861, so if anyone has any other tips for searching please post them! Thanks all! Brenda

Any chance he was visiting his grandparents in Scotland? (along the lines of Heather's earlier post.) Christine

Nope, in 1861 his Grandpa was widowed and living with his parents… but I can’t find the Grandpa in the 1851 so he was probably still in Scotland or mistranscribed in England! Will search the 1851 some more. Brenda
