Sorry if I'm rambling, my brain is in detective mode. Lydia's likely parents are Thomas Leather and Jane Gerrard. They married on 13 JUN 1813 Wigan, Lancashire, England. The record for this on the IGI says it comes from Parish register transcripts, 1626-1852 Church of England. Parish Church of Wigan (Lancashire). So, is Independent just another related section of the Church of England?

First thing to do is to check if the Ashton in Makerield Chapel was licenced to perform marriages at that time - probably not. I think it was me who found the possible Moreton/Lennard marrriage on Cheshirebmd? If so,I think this was a register office wedding, which was often the choice of people who had strong views about marrying in the Anglican Church.Either way, the entry on Cheshirebmd will tell you where they married. Hi That's the one yes. Yes I've checked bmd, its driving me bananas lol! There are one or two possible ones, including a possible (mistranscribed, I'm hoping) marriage of Mary Lennard and Thomas Moreton. I have found Lydia on the census up to 1891 variously as Lydia and as Mary L. Moreton, although I ahve found a baptism record for a Lydia Leather, with the right parents I think. I've also found a Lois, with the same parents so there's another possibility. The IGI seems to have baptism records for 1822 to 1836 for the Independent chapel, and in fact the Lydia baptism I've found is for Independent church, Hope St, in Wigan in 1820. I suspect they married in or around 1841, as Lydia is with her parents in 1841, and their first child is born 1844.

This may seem a silly question but have you checked the BMD´s for a possible marriage? - or are we talking pre 1837?

I have found what seems to be my ggg gran Lydia Leather's baptism on the IGI, and her brother David also. These match up well with the cenus info Ihave for both in 1822. Both were baptised in 'Ashton-in-Makerfield Independent'. Just looked u soem info about this on genuki which basically says this denomination has now merged into the united reform church. My quesiton is where might Thomas, who was c of e, and Lydia (an independent) married, or where would they have been allowed to marry? I know one of grt granparents was catholic and married someone c of e, they got married in one church and then again in the porch of the other. Can anyone give me any pointers so I can narrow my search?
