It sounds to me as if the parents were not married but the father didn't mind being named as the father, and they hadn't decided which name to give him. I am only guessing though, so maybe someone else can give a definite answer. Kath. x

the birth of John Shelley or Brown father John Shelley mother Catherine Brown from the IGI Berkshire does this mean they were not married or what thankyou Margaret
