I have ancestors who were coalminers in Somerset and have used a rootsweb database Somerset Coalfield connections extensively. I have found it very user friendly. My father came from a village called Kelston near Bath and while researching his family I have aquired a lot of information about the other families in the village which I would be happy to share. I wonder if anyone has tried using rootsweb or any other web site to create a village geneology data base. I have tried looking at rootsweb but can not see any simple instructions on how to create a database.

I have my full tree on Rootsweb. Very easy to maintain and search facilities are good as well.

Thankyou very much for your imput. I thought rootsweb looked good because of the search facility. I have a gedcom from here or from ftm but what I really wanted was to be able to upload details of several families. I have also been looking at the free webspace on rootschat but I used to be blonde and am not sure if I could manage the technology. I have family tree maker which has a facility to create a website but only seems to connect to ancestry.

Hi Annie, If you want to have several families on RootsWeb, I assume you mean a separate Gedcom for each, you ned to create a separate logon for each. The RootsWeb user guide tells you how. You can have as many as you like. Paul

Thanks Paul. I think that is what I would need to do. I have contact details on ancestral villages but have never had a contact through it. I don't think it is picked up by many search engines and I find the form to enter individuals very off putting. The type is quite small as well.
