I have a death cert and in the Cause of Death column it says Paralysis Not Certified. what does that mean thanks ???

The paralysis might be from a stroke, or some other condition.....the not certified means they were not seen after death by a doctor. Was it before the 1860's? Merry

From www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm 'Paralysis Will generally mean a stroke if used as an unmodified term'

It also means that the cause of death is only what the informant told the Registrar. The Registrar would not question this. OC

For information about what is on a bmd cert and what it means, I recommend this site, add it to your favourites: http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm

Its amazing to think you could go and say somebody had died and you would get a Death Cert, I wonder how many were actually murdered???

Watch it....Olde Crone will be getting ready to come out of her hovel! She says people used to take out a life insurance on a fictitious person......then register a fictitious death and claim the money!! LOL I think up to about 1860 deaths didn't have to be certified by a dr. Check out the Cert Tutorials: http://www.dixons(.)clara(.)co.uk/Certificates/indexbd.htm remove ( )'s Merry

Harold Shipman murdered hundreds of people - and he signed all their death certs. The fact that a doctor did/didn't sign or provide cause of death probably is no guide to whether or not they were murdered. nell

*********! My Server is playing up - I wrote an EXTREMELY informative post about murder for profit in the 19th century, but even the Server was bored with hearing about it and threw it away. Sulk sulk. OC

i was under the impression that 'not certified' after a cause of death, meant that the condition hadn't been diagnosed by a doctor. I have death certificates where it says 'chronic bronchitis, 6 months certified', and 'carcinoma of breast, 12 months certified', meaning that the deceased had had the disease for 6 months and 12 months respectively. I would think that 'paralysis, not certified', just means that the doctor hadn't seen the person and diagnosed them before death. Kath. x

The whole point being, that if a death was uncertified, then the cause is anyone's guess - and frequently was just that, a guess. OC
