Any tips on how to search for my 'jailbird' uncle! - according to 1881 census was an inmate at the Leicester County Prison, nothing at RO, sent an email to National Archives, waiting for a reply from them. Anybody had similar problem?

I had a great great grandad who was an inmate, but it was not a jailbird. He was in the Newcastle upon Tyne City Lunatic Asylum, As yet I dont know why.

It usually says 'prisoner' for people in prison, doesn't it? Are you sure he wasn't in the workhouse?

If you mean Thomas Allsopp born 1839, he was an inmate in the Royal Hospital For Incurables, Putney Heath.

You can usually see which institution by looking at the details for the census reference. If you google 'Royal Hospital Incurables' you ought to be able to find out more about this institution and also where any archives are kept. Generally finding an ancestor in a lunatic asylum, hospital, workhouse or prison isn't a 'problem', but an advantage as you can find out quite a bit more about them. nell

Douglas, I've just noticed that you've amended your first message to say that your uncle was in the Leicester County Prison. You could try contacting the records office in Wigston, Leicester, or post a message on the thread called 'Who are we looking for in Leicester (Part Nine)' to see if anyone knows where to get hold of Leicester prison records. http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/community/museums/record_office.htm
