what I know so far is this: My mam can remember him visiting when she was a child of about 3 or 4, which would have been in 1934/1935. He came with his Batman, so therefore was an officer. He was in the Cameronians Scottish Rifles regiment. I have been given information about a Tom Taylor in the cameronians who kind of fits my family member. He was a QM, which is one of the ranks you can become an officer from. He ended up as a Major Thomas Charles Taylor MBE and MM. The Regimental museum has given me the following facts: he became QM 2nd LT on 20.1.1928. Captain on 17.11.36, and Major 12.12.1943. Was discharged from regiment before Dec 1949, although I dont know date, and aparantly died on the 3.3.1957. My dilema is I cant find his death. He was discharged whilst at Heighton Camp near Liverpool, and went on to become the quartermaster at the I.T.C. Any idea what that is ?? Help gratefully received. I will be away from Saturday for 5 nights so if i dont reply for a while that is why. Thanks everyone. I need his birth too..... dont know when that is either. His father as far as I know is William. |

Might be worth putting ''Army'' or ''Military'' somewhere in your header to alert the relevant experts? ITC sounds like [I] Training College/Camp? Christine |

The job of a Quarter master (QM) is responsible for all stores, accommodation, rations, ammunition, and all other equipment, his rank would normally be captain but this depends on what he is the QM ov e.g, battalion, camp, ( ITC ) is Infantry Training Centre Roy |

Hi there is a site called Britregiments which I found very helpful when I was looking into an Army ancestor. They have a forum and there is no shortage of knowledgable and helpful people there. Good Luck Ronnie |

Check to see whether he had a military grave at www.cwgc.org Even if he was not killed in action, he may have died of illnesses related to any injury received (this happened a lot several years later with soldiers who were gassed for example) and he would still have the war grave. This site has photos of the grave and everything - its invaluable! As you have his rank and number you can also search for details of any medals etc - the medal cards often offer useful information at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk I found both of these sites really helpful with my army rellies Good luck! |
