How old were they when they were getting wed around 1841 pls? I have a child on the 1841 Census and if her age is right she would only have been 14 by the 1851 but she still isn't there and I can't find a death for her. Is it worth checking marriages??

12 for girls and 14 for boys (or is it the other way round). Don't forget though that a lot of girls from about 12 upwards would be sent to work as servants. Glen

On the 1841 Census I have a family with Charles Knowles - Head, Dorathy - Wife, and kids - Laney, Robert and Ann - all Knowles. Then on the 1851 Census Dorothy has remarried and is now Taylor, hubby Edward Taylor. Children are still all Knowles (Robert, Ann, Isabella and Elizabeth) but Laney is not there. She is down as 4 years old on 1841 so would only have been 14 by the 1851 but she isn't there?? 1851 has all kids born in Skerton, Lancashire so I guess Laney would have been too - 1841 Census doesn't give place of birth. UPDATE: I can't find the original marriage so can't help with Laney's place of birth other than to say where the others were born. Sorry. Any help greatly appreciated.

I couldn't actually read it but it as transcribed as Laney so I just went with that. Looking at it now, it does look more like Nancy - and that would fit better cos Laney seems quite a posh name for that time!! Thanks for that!! I will go off and have a look for a Nancy Knowles then. Sorry to those of you that went off looking for Laney.....please don't shoot me!

ALWAYS check the image - the transcriptions are so often wrong.

I love you all sooooo much!!! Never even thought to look for her being in service. As for her name, I did read the actual census page but I couldn't make it out so I just went with the transcription that Ancestry had for it. Thank you all soooo much. You have made me very happy and there is half a chance that I'll get to bed before the wee small hours tonight - for a change!!
