STILL LOOKING I am still looking for my great grandmother. I have put this on here before, b,t I have still not found her apart from on grandfather’s birth certificate which reads:: Reg Dist, Saint Savioiur Surrey. 1st Nov 1874, 38 Castle Street, Father : George Sherriff. Mother: Caroline Mary Sherriff, formerly Heasley, Occ of father, General Hawker. Informant G Sherriff, Father, 38 Castle Street, Southwark The problem is, I cannot find any other trace of Caroline Mary Heasley, and George was married to Mary Ann, widow of J J Elliott, at the time., the next child, Albert, was born, 15 Apr 1877, to Mary Ann at 38 Castle Street. The first I can find of George, was in the 1851, Geo, Sherriff , Hawker White House Yard. St. Clement Dane, Westminster, living alone Then 1861, George was aged 37, Hawker, living at 1 Birch’s Place, Liberty of the Rolls, Strand, married to Caroline, 29, Dressmaker, born Leamington Warwickshire. May 27 1861, George married Caroline WATTS, at St Thomas’ Church, Liberty of the Rolls, Both of full age, address of both was 3 Birch’s Place, fathers: Richard Sherriff Musician and John Watts, Inn Keeper. Witnesses: Frederick Sherriff (brother, I believe) and Caroline X Hawkins. Unable to trace them on the 1871, or Caroline’s death. On Jan 7 1874 George Married Mary Ann Elliott, formerly Edgeley at The Church in thr parish of St James The Great, Middx. Both of full age, both widowed, both resident at Bethnal Green, Fathers: Richard Sherriff, decd and John Edgeley, shoemaker. Witnesses, X James Avgard? and Emma Edwards. On 1st Nov 1874 George Richard was born to Caroline Mary Sherriff, formerly Heasley. 15 Apr 1877 Albert Sheriff born, Mother Mary Ann, formerly Elliott. informant Geo Sheriff, father 38 Castle Street. (Only used one R in the name) 15 Oct 1879 Alfred born, Mother Mary Ann Sherriff, formerly Elliott. informant G Sheriff, father, 195 Tabard Street. 1881 Census George Sheriff, 62, St Clement’s Mary Sheriff, wife, 40, Greenwich James E Sheriff, son 10, Lambeth (I believe this was a stepson, son of Mary Ann and his name was John James Elliott, and appears on the 1871 with his father (of the same name) and mother, Mary Ann. George Sheriff, son, 6, Southwark Albert Sheriff, son 4 Southwarg Alfred Sheriff, son, 1 Southwark 221 Tabard Street, Southwark 17th Dec 1882, John William Sheriff born, Mother: Mary Ann Sheriff, Late Elliott, formerly Edgeley, Occ of father, General Dealer, Informant, X the mark of Mary Ann Sheriff, mother, 195 Tabard St, Southwark 1891 Geor Sheriff, Hawker (68) 1823 St Clement Danes Mary Ann Sheriff, 52, Lambeth (obviously wrong) John Sheriff, stepson, 20, Carman, G.N.R, Lambeth George Sheriff, son, 16, van boy, Southwark Albert Sheriff son, 13 apprentice Alfred Sheriff son, scholar John Sheriff son, “ 1899 George died aged 78.St Olave. Questions. Did Caroline Mary Heasley acutally exist? Was he actually a widower when he married Mary Ann? How could Caroline Mary be his wife and the mother of George R, when he had only been married to Mary Ann for 10 months. Did he forget his wife’s name? Why can’t I find George on the 1871? Any thoughts? David

only a thought David..... the names Edgeley and Heasley do you think either may have been mistranscribed for the other? And perhaps George did get confused and say his wife was Caroline to the registrar instead of Mary Ann! If you could just find them in 1871 perhaps it would narrow down when Caroline died - I take it you have looked at the address they were at in 1874? I have had a quick look for Caroline in 1841/51 but nothing conclusive. There is a John Watts publican in 1841 Leamington but no daughter Caroline at home. Have found a Caroline Sheriff death in Foleshill, Warwickshire in 1871 (age 41)- do you think she might have died while visiting family back home?

Thank you Netti Mary Ann was definitely Edgeley. I have found her baptism in Greenwich and in 1871 her brother, Wiliam Edgeley was staying with the family. George R's birth cert, plainly says his mother is Caroline Mary, formerly Heasley. I did wonder if George forgot his wife's name. I think someone looked for the address in 1871, but I cannot remember if they found it. I did find the death of Caroline in Foleshill, but there are quite a few Sheriffs and Sherriffs in Foleshill. regards David
