I don't know Hazel - but I should be very wary. Have a look at his website for starters. I'm sure some of the other wise folk on hear will advise soon, too. Jacquie

I've just looked on the GOONS website and a Mr Allan Vint is registered as a guild member for that surname. His postal and email address are recorded on their site. How did he contact you? Through Genes Reunited? Merry

Haven't heard of this chap myself. But one name studies can serve a purpose...for example, especially with uncommon surnames - you could find a few links to your own ancestors by searching sites such as his. It really is entirely up to you if you want to divulge your information to him or not. Maybe check out his website and see what you think, if you'd like your Vint's to be added to it, or not.

Hi Hazel If you google for the Guild of One Name Studies site you'll find that Alan Vint is registered with them. People doing one name studies are grateful for any input and may be able to help you with your research too. Heather

Have just had a quick browse on his website and to me he seems like a genuine researcher. He gives plenty of info about himself and his family, history and census data for Vints in Scotland. If it were me I wouldn't have a problem giving the info.

As a researcher registered with the Guild of One Name Studies he probably knows alot about your family already. To register with the Guild he will have to have a record of all available GRO index references- and alot more. What these researchers have problems with is bringing the various families forward from 1901. They try to find links between families with the same surname by finding a common ancestor. I have a friend registered with the Guild and she has over 1500 certificates so communication could be beneficial to you, but you only have to disclose as much as you are comfortable with. Gwyn

An Olde Crone Report 21 Jun 2006 19:40

I too had an unsolicited approach from a GOONS member, who offered me loads of info on my family, for which I was very grateful. The only thing I was able to offer in return was the transcript of two Wills, which I gladly gave. Olde Crone
