That's what I did too, Nell. Much easier to leave out the surname if you think it might be mistranscribed. Kath. x

Denise It helps that Elias is a relatively uncommon name. I just searched for Elias born Derbyshire within a year of 1868. nell

Having studied court cases in the Derby Paper from 1840 to 1900+ i often collected names of people convicted of crimes, and then later looked for them on the census and i would say 60% of people in the courts were not on the nearest census to the case, almost like there was an underclass that never filled a census in.

They were Elias Bowmer born 1867 and his father was William Bowmer born 1834 Heage Derbyshire.

It was easy to avoid - my family all managed to do so at one time or another - they were circus people and seemed to have a deep distrust of anything official. Even my grandparents in more recent times refused to open the door to the census man!

Who are you looking for? It is more likely that they are mistranscribed, unless they were the sort of family who might have gone abroad. Kath. x

The usual reason for not finding a family on a census is that they've been mistranscribed. Who are you looking for?

Why is there no record of my family in 71/81. Is there a reason? was it easy to avoid? I have searched over and over. All other census filled in. Deno dinosaur.
