Just had a thought - if I get Arthur James Medlock and Ethel Wilson(my grandma) MC then it will say dad is Arthur Medlock - but both of those certificates give fathers name as Arthur. Hopefully the occupation will match one? Jools - my dad was born in Rotherham but he was told that his dad (Arthur James Medlock) originated from Cambridgeshire. Whether he was born there and then moved to Rotherham or was born in Rotherham we don't know. Yes they were the couple I found Reg, not sure whether that would be it was liekly that Arthur James was born in Rotherham too though.

Thanks Reg - yes I've had that one before too! My grandmother gave a different age on my other grandfathers death cert and there was a note at the bottom to say that and another error had been corrected by a mystery person and my grandma. It turned out that the mystery woman was his wife - my mum found she had another family within a week of me starting out on here!! Either way it doesn't rule out one or the other certificate does it? Relatives!

I think you're going to need Arthur's marriage cert.............the father's name and occupation will be recorded on it. Reg

Well, the age on his death cert is only as given by the informant, so could be inaccurate. Reg

I have the death certificate for my grandfather Arthur James Medlock. States he died on 4th January 1951 age 48 in Rotherham. I know this is definitely my grandfather. So next we tried to get his birth certificate. There were two on the index around the same time, one born in Cambridgeshire and one in Rotherham. My dad told me that his dad's family originated from that area so wasn't sure which one to get, so got the Cambridgeshire one first. We decided once it arrived that it couldn't be him because it stated birthdat 18th June 1903 which meant he would've been 47 when he died. Stated his parents as Arthur Medlock and Mary Ann Medlock, formerly Ruddy. In the meantime, dad's elderley half sister has given us some names. She said that Arthur James's dad was called Albert and that brothers and sisters names were Alf, Albert, Ada, Grace, Alice and Elsie. So we've just got the other certificate which states that this Arthur James Medlock was born on 1st Jan 1904 which would've meant he was just 47 when he died. Parents names Mary Elizabeth Medlock formerly Richardson and dad Arthur Medlock!! Arrrgghhh! I think these brothers and sisters were born after the census in 1901 as I've found some possible birth entries. Is the only way to solve this, to send off for one of supposed brothers or sisters certificates and check their parents names? Problem is, there seems to be some occurences of these names born in Cambridgeshire area and Rotherham Anyone any thoughts? Think I will have to mow lawn now to mull it over!!
