could someone please help me with this question,i have a james arnott living in gateshead tyne and wear date of birth 1847/8 and its got his place of birth as keswick cumbria... but on the other census i.e. 1891 right back to 1851 he was born berwick upon tweed (ancroft)...everything else matches just he has a new wife on the 1901, and he is down as a locomotive blacksmith . where as he has just been blacksmith on the other . |

Bearing in mind the enumerator put details down and these were then transcribed later on,it is possible that Keswick could have been misread as Berwick (or misheard as such when the census was taken). I have details for rellies with occupations which are the same description but more or less detailed with each census (ie machine man in one census, machine man agriculture in another) I also have them move county (for place of birth),it depends who did the speaking to the enumerator on the night, and how well it was recorded. I wouldn't worry abou the occupation change as they are interlinked. About the place of birth though....... Don't forget, the enumerator would be copying onto the census sheet what he read from the householders schedule. Berwick and Keswick could easily be mistaken for each other and the county added incorrectly, having made the first mistake! This may be his second marriage: Name: James Arnott Year of Registration: 1892 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Gateshead County: Co. Durham, Tyne And Wear Volume: 10a Page: 1050 Possible spouse, Margaret Dawson. Merry |
