Glitter The 71 details transcrbed as Elmir are the correct family, the Elma transcription doesn't appear to fit. I shouldn't panic about anything from 81 to 1901 for Martha as i know that i have her pinned down thanks to help in the past. As suggested it would seem likely that the kids were together and seeing as there are links to the railways with occupations then i think the train was the method of transport used, varied references to station masters, goods clerks and railway checkers abound in the later census years. 4 kids in their teens missing though does seem a bit of a stretch. Variations tried to date include Ellmer,Elmes,Aylmer,Elenor as well as initials (including with and without the middle 'T' and christian names only. Glen

Elizabeth married a Wells, one of her stepmums children. George abt 1858 married a girl from Lincoln, although the marriage was in Stockport. They return to Lincoln and he works as a clerk. I just get the feeling that Lincoln plays a part somewhere, but the Lancs and Stockport connections in 1881 seem slightly strange, kids out there and dad staying in Lincoln. Glen

Hi Glitter Yes that's George the head from the 61 and his youngest daughter, she remained with him and married in 1885 in Lincoln. I have her in the 91 and 1901 with her hubby. George is recorded through from 1841 to 1891 and possibly 1901 but there are two George Elmer deaths in Lincoln in 1901 with reasonable ages for a match. It really is the 71 that causes the problems,i just wish i could find where they went after mum died in 1863.George remarried in 1868 in Norwich, but the kids seem to have been abandoned somewhere, just the youngest stays with him. George and Elizabeth appear to have stuck together. Where did they marry, and when? Are their spouses Stockton based? Lots of my Norfolk people head north east, turning up in Stockton, Sunderland, Newcastle etc. The children may well be up there, with other extended family members.

I've looked and looked with no luck yet! As there are several missing, then that suggests wherever they were, they are all together. I wonder if they were in transit and got missed off the census? ........ I concentrated on Martha and George. Merry

Merry Report 19 Jun 2006 12:10

I wasn't aware of any special problems with the 1871 census. Ancestry have not made a list of missing places (!!). If you knew where these people were going to be, then I would have suggested doing a search on the place only in 1861, 1871 and 1881, to see how many people were living there - that gives an idea of whether a great swathe is missing.....but won't help if you don't know where they should be! I need to avoid Olde Crone for the next few days/weeks, so if you want to post what you know about your family from 1861 and also which people were known to be alive in 1871 etc then I'll have a look if no one else gets their first! (have to make some food in a minute!) Disbanded families always seem to be the most difficult to find. Merry

I can find my 2x g g/parents and 3x g/gparents with sibs/spouses etc but my g g/parents seem to be missing. I have tried varied spellings, initials and christian name only but no joy after 3 months of looking. My g g/m lost her mother in 1863 and her father is easy to find with new wife but minus 5 kids. One is in a workhouse 100 miles away and one is with relatives but i can't locate any of the others.
