I live just down the road from Easington and Shotton, my families are from this area too. Most of the old streets were made up from wholy inadequate miners cottages of which very few survive. Easington has lots of newer homes dating from the 30's and 40's and later, as does Shotton. Our ancestors probably wouldn't know where the heck they were if you brought them back. I would say that your address is one of those that have long gone with the advent of better housing and the demise of the pits in the NE Carol

Maybe he aspired to the showbiz life. Perhaps he worked in a nearby town?

Hi Helen, I`ve had a look on that site its really good, on ancestry there are 3 districts i think, i looked at the roads the enumerator covered district 4 and 5 covered shotton colliery but i couldnt make out some of the roads in 4, the enumerators writng wasnt very neat, the 5th district the handwriting was lovely, just wished they had used that person on all of them lol. one thing that has me stumped though is why there were there, on mays death cert hughs occupation says actor but it was a mining village unless he lied or worked at the mens clubs, but his marriage cert and sons birth cert both say dramatic artiste

I have found by googling: By 1871 there were 323 households at *** Shotton Colliery ***village. The enumerator for that year mentioned: Albert St.; Front St.; 1st. - 4th. Low Rows; 1st. - 6th. High Rows; 1st. - 3rd. Chapel Rows; 1st. House Row; 1st & 2nd. School Rows; ***Sunderland Row***; Railway Row; Reading Room Row; and 1st. & 2nd. Stable Rows. He then moved on to cover a new community called 'Haswell Moor' where there were 130 more households - Front Row, 1st. To 3rd. North Rows (all tiny), 1st. New Row (North), Middle New Row (North), South New Row (only 1 household). I have not been able to locate the community of 'Haswell Moor' on the 1897 map. There was also a 'Haswell Moor' at Haswell and Easington to complicate matters. source: www.durhamrecordsonline*.*com/literature/shotton.php remove * to use the above web addy. nell
