Hi I have just found a death on the CWGC website that leads me to believe that a particular branch of my family may have emigrated to Australia some tme after 1891 (the last english census i can find them on). Does any one know if it is either possible to search Australian censuses for c1900 or if there are any passenger lists available? Thanks Sam x

No, the Australian censuses are destroyed after the statistical data have been extracted. Passenger lists are scattered all over the place - I've started a thread on the Records Office board called Passenger Lists where people can list them. I've already listed quite a few. Do you know where in Australia they went? NSW births, marriages and deaths are available online, but not all states do that.

As far as I know it was Queensland. Thanks anyway! Sam x

If you have any names and dates, you could ask for someone in Oz to do a look-up for you. I don't think Queensland BMDs are online. However, they have some very good passenger lists: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp

By the way, was your relative serving with the Australian forces?

Hi Mary, He was born over here in Derbyshire but his death is on the CWGC site as serving in the Australian Army. There is a memorial tablet in his honour inside the parish church in Derbyshire. Title: Memorial Inscription Page: Mugginton Church: A wall mounted memorial plaque states: To the Glory of God, and in Loving Memory of Lieut. Tom Webster A.I.F. son of William Webster late of Mercaston Hall and Sarum Queensland who died of wounds in Palestine Nov 8th 1917 'He did his duty' I just wondered when he went to Australia. Sam x

Well, it's your lucky day. The Australian government's begun digitising servicemen's records, and putting them online free of charge, and unless I'm very much mistaken, Tom's is among them. Go to this site: http://www.naa.gov.au/The_Collection/recordsearch.html Click on 'search now as a guest', search for Webster Tom, and the second one on the page is yours. Click on 'View digital copy'. His record runs to 60 pages.
