Genealogy Chat

I have just received a Death Certificate from 1843. In the section for Cause of Death it says 'Nature of Death by the visitation of God'. How times have changed. Another one that a relation has reads 'he had a heart attack while passing the ticket office on his local railway station'. Anyone else had any fascinating ones? Pam.

My Great Granfather committed sucided by slitting his throat. The death certificate goes into great detail about how and what with and it was quite a shock when I first saw it. Its funny I never knew him but it really upset me. The worrying thing is it also stated that he did it while he was temporarily insane...................my husband says that answers a lot of questions!!!!!!!!! lol. Susan

I've got one for a relative who was a miner, the cause of death reads 'From a quantity of stone falling upon him' - poor chap! And the one for my great grandfather just reads 'has diabetes' - well so do a few of my family and they haven't didn't die from it. Also he died in a mental hospital, I didn't realise you got locked up for having diabetes in 1935! Sam x

I have a death certificate from 1856 which under Cause of Death says, 'Unknown, uncertified'. It conjures up a picture of the informant (his brother-in-law's brother), lugging the corpse round to the Registrar and saying, 'Well, here he is, just to prove he's dead'. It's very frustrating, though. This chap was only 29. Surely they must have been able to make a guess at what killed him? Had he been coughing for the past few months? Was he found lying at the foot of the stairs? For heaven's sake, there must have been some clue! Tina

LOL Tina! A friend's ancestor was killed on his way home from the pub. He followed the railway line, but forgot about the possibility of a TRAIN coming! He was decapitated. When I mentioned this, in passing, to my father-in-law he said, ''How dreadful......did he die''!!! LOL Merry

Merry - I like that! I know several living people who would actually function considerably better without their heads. Tina
