Hi All, What advise do you have for where I go next. My family are not showing up on the 1841 -71 census's. Eventhough I have found parish records of them being born in an area, prior to this.. Due to the surname being spelt so many different ways throughout my research, I have even tried trawling the census's street by street, hoping to find something that way. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Kind regards, Elaine. (Australia) |

It is quite probable that they have been mistranscribed somehow. If you want to give us some details will have another look for you - often a fresh pair of eyes helps! |

Do you have them in 1881 then? If you do, maybe you could post the details. Merry |

Bonjour all. I've got a similar problem with my Elliott family. I Thoma Elliott born 1821 in Caucester Gloucestershire (I think that might be Cirencester) Ann his wife born 1829 in Reading Berkshire Eliza Ann bornb Dec 1856 in London (Pancras Old Church records, there is nogovernment record) Frances Olive born 1859 in London. I've got them on the 1861 census then nothing until the daughter Eliza Ann appears on the 1881 census married to Joseph Roberts in Prescott Lancashire. The others have disappeared. I've already asked for help on them before but no luck. Another question. How can I find out who was living at 25 Betley Street, Platt Bridge, Hindley, Lancs in 1900? Also, I sometimes have a problem believing what's on a census. My gt gt grandad Benjamin Sale is on the early censuses as born in 1814/17 then in 1871 there's a Benjamine Sale born in 1834 with the same wife Mary (she's 8 yrs younger) and the same children as Benjamin born 1814. Is it him? I haven't found a death cert for him although in 1881 Mary is a widow living with her son. It says on the later census that he was born in Bristol ,Cheshire. Does that exist? It would be lovely if one of you (who seem to know an awful lot about these things) could help me out. Thanks in anticipation. Patricia |

Patricia You have to make allowances for mistakes/mistranscriptions. If you look at image you will get a different picture. Ben Sale in 1871 aged 57 born Bristol ????? death Benjamin Sale abt 1813 1880 Jul-Aug-Sep Leigh Lancashire |

Thanks Jim. I hadn't read the age as 57. Do you think that the place of birth is written Gloucester Bristol? I'll check on Joseph Sale, father who seems to have been born in Bristol too. I never ever imagined that I had ancestors from Bristol. Now I'm wondering why they went to Lancashire in the ea |

Hello again Jim. Thanks for the further information. That cheered me up after watching France play a very bad game of football. It will be 'National Disaster Day' here tomorrow. What do you think I should do next? Get a copy of his marriage certificate (there's a Ben Sale on the IGI married to Mary Critchley in 1835) or try and find out where he was born. I presume Bristol has a site for parish records. Glad to have your advice. Patricia |

Help again, please! I've received the death certificate for Benjamin Sale but it doesn't give his place of birth. Does anyone know the best way of finding out wherabouts in Bristol he was born. His father Joseph Sale is also mentioned as born in Bristol 1787. From what year do death certificates give the place of birth as on my grandad's it is mentioned? Many thanks in advance. Patricia |

Patricia - english death certificates never have given the place of birth. If you need to know more, may I politely suggest you start a new thread - of your own - since this thread were are on now belongs Elaine in Australia. Jools |
