If you know the county that your relatives came from, go to any library and look at the telephone books for that county(they have them all). Then photocopy the page with the surname you are looking for. This will give you a list of addresses and telephone numbers. Then scan the list to identify the most likely towns within that county where your surname appears. This will give you a short list of most probables. Ring or write to a few, tell them what you are doing, ask them if they are doing their own tree, I did this in both Essex and Kent with remarkable results. If you are polite and not pushy, people will normally offer a great deal of help. Many families move on but I found mainly the older people remained in the county they were born in. It helps if you have an unusual name. Try it. Regards Maurice

You are lucky if you have a library with those facilities!! (I am envious!!). I live near a brand new central library that cost billions of pounds and they only have a few phone books for this town only (never mind this whole county and never mind anywhere else in the country!) and none for most recent years! You may have to ask for the directory,if it is not on display in the reference section Maurice

Merry, Go in to your library and ask them to get the ones you want , they may not have been open long enough to take in stock of them. Maurice 62 and a half!

Lol Maurice!! I'm afraid our new library is just like a shop. ''If you can't see it on the shelf, we don't have it''!! I used to frequent the old library before they spent a fortune on the new one.........Yes it was slightly smaller, yes it was always freezing cold, but also, YES it was quiet, and YEEESSS it had a lot of BOOKS in it! (unlike the new one!) Sorry, I am exaggerating here a little (only a bit!)......How many councils would build a large library where, if you wish to reach the front door from the nearest car park, you have to traverse about 50 years of dual carriageway with no footpath! I will ask about the phone books though........ Am quite happy with surprises! That's if I don't get run down in the process.....................! Merry
