I have been searching 1881 for JAMES WILLIAM KNOLL bn sept 1862 Gayton Thorpe, Norfolk but no luck. Now I have found on ancestry WILLIAM KNOTT bn Norfolk, servant, Kensington, London and am wondering if someone could check out the original for me please to see if it is the same. In 1891 & 1901 I have him in Depford area. Surrey. Many thanks Linda

Image does have him born at somewhere thorpe in Norfolk, but I wouldn't have said it said Gayton. Looks to me more like Raisthorpe. And yes it could be knoll instead of knott. Let's see what others think.

I think its Knott and the birth place looks like Raipthorpe, though according to Genuki that doesn't exist. nell

Maybe I had better keep searching, but I have run out of ideas of how his name and place of birth could be spelt/misheard. I am begining to think he must have been sleeping under a hedge on cencus night on his journey from Norfolk to London. Thank you Linda
