Hi guys. Thanks to the kind people on here that pointed me in the right direction and encouraged me not to give up, I have found that the Sophia Richards I had in my tree,(along with her parents, siblings, grand parents and gt grandparents) was NOT my Sophia!!!!! Thanks to some kind person finding another Sophia who also married around the same time, I sent for a marriage cert, and that's when I discovered the gruesome truth that I would have to delete a large part of my tree!! Lesson learnt. Anyhow, thankfully I now have a marriage cert for Sophia Richards Marrying Joseph Rose in December 1853, in Harborne. I am as certain as I can possible be that this is my lady. I have traced Sophia and Joseph from then onwards. But would love some help please on tracing Sophia with her family before she got married. She was born 1825-1830, in Birmingham. Her father on the marriage cert is named as Charles Richards, Labourer. Sophia's residence at time of Marriage is Harborne. I have searched and searched 1841 and 1851, used all sorts of spellings. and searched IGI. I did find a marriage for a Charles Richards marrying a Sarah Nutty 25 Feb 1828 in Harborne. I am hoping that this might be him, but no way of knowing. I have searched for Sarah Richards on the censuses too, but cant find a Sophia with her. Can anyone please help? Mandy XX

Problem is, that by 1851, Sophia would probably be living away from home, so I don't know how you would know if its the right one, but there's this lady: Birmingham St Thomas Warwickshire Isaac Collins abt 1808 Birmingham, Warwickshire, Head Charlotte Collins abt 1809 Birmingham, Warwickshire, Wife >>> Sophia Richards abt 1831 Birmingham, Lodger occupation: servant

Mandy I've had no luck with 1841. A lot of women did stay at home until they married, but a lot more went into domestic service, where they lived in (ie with the family they slaved for). More convenient if they were on the premises to get up early and make the tea, light the fire and get scrubbing! Most of my relatives - in the poor income bracket - were leaving home and working at around age 13 or so. nell

Hi Reg, yes he was married before to Ann. Then he married Sophia. Kate - the witnessess are George Westwood, and Harriet ?monkhouse. The vicar was John Garbott. Is there a way this can help me? I have looked for them on the census, but it didn't give me any clues. Mandy xx

Mandy, sorry for delay in reply, I don't know whether the witnesses' names will help but I was hoping one of them would be a Richards, preferably with an unusual first name! Kate.
