Hi Alison. This is an old nutmeg on this site. Cissie, Cissy could be a name in its own right. It could also be short for Cicely etc. It could be a name used by sibs. eg my mum was always known as Cis/Cissie and this was because she was the eldest. In some families the youngest/only daughter was called Cis by their sibs as a term of endearment. There are probably dozens of moe explanations. Went to aunt Whip's funeral the other day (sometimes Cyn) never Cynthia, her real name. She was in her 70's and got her name from a 'kiss me quick' type hat bought when a teenager on a day trip to the seaside. It had 'Whip' written on the hatband. The name stuck for all those years but the priest at her funeral service must have been a bit wary because she referred to 'Cynthia' rather than Whip or Cyn. Can't blame her really but everyone looked around to see if they were at the correct service! It's a funny old world! Roger GC

Male or female? Cecil for a man Cecilia or Cecily for a woman. I believe we have had a discussion about this name, in the past. It was suggested that it could be a name for the youngest daughter, ie. sis for sister. Gwyn
