Does anyone know if the first world war medal cards give the exact DOB of the Soldier?. I have just tried to request my great grandfathers war records from the Army personal centre as I knew he served after 1921, i knew his regimental number and a rough year of birth ( I have his marriage certificate) but they returned my application becuase I do not have the exact date of birth.

The medal cards I have downloaded from National Archives don't have any details for Date of Birth (there is no box to fill in relating to DOB) - not even a year, let alone an exact date. Just gives name, corps, rank, regimental number & medals.

Tamsin if you have his marriage certificate why don't you send off for his birth certificate? I imagine they wont send his records out to you because they probably think you are not next of kin (in their eyes they think you should probably know this infomation if you are related). Have you tried looking for it? Why not put some details up and see if someone can help you look? Snowdrops

I dont realy know about how to search for the birth certificate. His name was John Hunter (a very common name) Im nearly 100% sure he was born somewhere in Scotland. He must have been born around 1887 as he was 33 in Feb 1919, and the only other thing I know is that he Father was Alexander Hunter.

Tamsin, I'm just off myself to watch Big Brother. If you get no responses whilst I'm gone I shall have a look for you myself at 9.30 on the english bmd's. If he was Scottish, it may be as well to ask someone on records (or indeed this board) to have a look for you on Scotland's People (sorry my credits for that site have run out otherwise I'd look on there for you too). But anyway, I'll check back later and see how you get on! Snowdrops

Hello Tamsin Well I've had a look for you on the 1891 census and found a John Hunter born 1886 (which would make him 33 in 1914) with a father Alexander. Wondered why you thought Scotland till I saw Alexander was from Scotland - could this be what you were thinking of? Where did the marriage take place? Here's the details for the 1891 census - if you think it may be yours pm me with your email and I will gladly send the image across. Shall just look for the birth details now in case you want to claim him!!
