I have an ancestor.Eliza Mathews, born circa 1820. She married James Woodman 24/04/1841 - before the 1841 census. On her marriage certificate her residence is given as Old Sodbury, in the space for fathers name and occupation a line has been drawn. On the 1871 census her birthplace is given as Purton Wiltshire. By 1881, she has been widowed and in this census her birthplace is given as Codrington Gloucestershire. There is no reference to a baptism for her in Purton church records. Now, there are a couple of Mathews families in Wapley & Codrington in 1841. Someone from a Wiltshire list I am on pointed out that people didn't tend to marry far from home, and Wapley & Codrington is closer to Old Sodbury than Purton is. Anyone have any thoughts? Would I be better off trying to find her in Wapley rather than Purton? I think Wapley & Codrington records are held at Bristol Records office. thanks Lisa |

LIsa According to Ancestry the 1841 was taken after they got married. The 1841 Census for England was taken on the night of 6 June 1841. Wendy |

Sorry going mad again! yes that was what I should have said - taken after they married so no point trying to look for her with parents for 1841! I will correct original message! |

Must be worth a try. The baptism record will probably tell you which village the parent(s) lived in too. Kate. |

If the bride and groom lived in different parishes at the time of marriage they should have had the Banns in the two parishes. Many told fibs about where they lived to avoid the expense so the residence on the marriage cert may be a red herring. However residence at the time of marriage could be miles away from where they were born. Have you got the right couple in the 41? Glen |
