Thanks Jess & Kate I had already thought she may have been telling porkies, Maybe thats why they went from Bridgwater all the way to swansea to get married. On a positive note though, I have just looked up the residence at time of marriage in 1871 and have just found another family of James, these must be rellies!! Thanx again Michelle :) X |

Possible explanations are that you have the wrong birth certificate, or the information about her father on her marriage certificate is not exactly true (or her mother and father had the same surname as each other but were not married to each other - it could happen!) Kate. |

probably because she had no father ( well, that she knew of anyway ) and made up a fathers name ( conviently dead ) for respectabilty. and of course during her childhood 'he' was a way at sea , as a mariner, so no-one knew him anyway ( or would have expected him to have been around) |

I am exhausted on this one, and now my head is thumping!! I am looking for Elizabeth James b1851 Bridgwater. She Married 1871,certificate says father .William James, Occupation Mariner, deceased. I have just received birth certificate this morning and it says she was born 20/07/1851 Union house Bridgwater but only her mother is on the certificate. Mary Ann James why could this be? The only census I have for elizabeth is in 1871 after her marriage. Can anybody please help me find my James before 1871, Thankyou Michelle:( |
