Did he marry in this country? His marriage cert would give his father's name, which I assume would be the child of, or son-in-law of, his grandparents. Merry

Jen, you can search in the 'overseas' section of 1837 online to see if his birth registration is on there. Kate.

Thanks to you too Joan, at least I know I'm not the only one. I'm constantly amazed at how these ancestors got about so much -I know we think nothing of hopping over to europe but in the 19 cent. in cant have been a picnic! Jenx

Thanks Gillian I must admit I do like a challenge - so I might just do that ( thankfully I have a french speaking neighbour to smooth the way) However the confusing bit is that it does state that he is a 'British Subject' - i thought that meant he was born in Britain - on one census but not on the other - I'm a bit confused? Think I may try to find his parents by another route as well as try the france option - there may be clues elsewhere - (she says with fingers crossed!) Thank you for your help Jenx Just seen your post Gwen - that could fit - thanks x

Hi, If he was born in Marseille, you could apply to the Mairie 'town hall' where his acte de naissance would have been registered. This would give his birth date & details of parents, address. Gillian

I have in both 1851 (Frodsham)&1861 census (Widnes) Alfred Rixon b1845 possibly Marseilles France but states he is a British Subject. He is a Grandson of my gx3 gparents but not a direct line. My q is - is it nigh on impossible to find his birth and therefore who his parents were? I'm wondering if I'm trying to be too optimistic in tracing him - why was he in france etc - when i've got lots of direct lines to chase. Thanks Jen x
