My Tip: If its not in the GRO, try the local Register Office - I have six certificates for various events which never got to the GRO. OC

Hi all: I have tried this sibling path but having to climb another hurdle. His younger sibling turns out to be an half sister. George was born in 1846. His father died in 1851, his mother my gg grandmother re-married in 1852. He had one other sister, so I am on her trial, hoping she is older. regards Frank

You may not find the reg'n simply because it wasn't compulsory until 1875............ Reg

Good thinking, Merry. It is obviously too early for me to be awake. I did exactly the same thing last night - sent for the certificate of a younger sibling to get the mother's maiden name, my rellie having been very inconveniently born in Scotland.

Don't forget there was no penalty for non-registration until 1875. Have you looked for birth certs for his siblings? If you can find a cert for a brother or sister born after George and the mother's maiden name ties in with a marriage before George's birth (in the right sort of time frame and place) then it would usually be fairly safe to assume you are looking at the right people. I have a similar problem with my great grandfather who doesn't seem to appear in the GRO birth records. It wasn't compulsory to register births until I think 1865, so he may simply not have been registered. You could try finding a baptism, maybe in a church near Hull docks.

I am having problems finding my great grandfathers birth cert. his name was George Haigh, father Francis Haigh. born 1845/6. On the Census's he was born in Hull. Hull have no record. He told the family 'He was born on board a ship in Hull Docks, over seas births have no record. Regards Frank. I have been told by family members that I will not find his cert due to the above rejections Problem, where do I go from here? regards Frank.
