Does anyone know why the occupation on census of a 10 yr old child is listed as nurse...the person i am looking at is not living with her family at that time .or at least not on that night janet |

This one comes up so often!! A nurse child is a foster child - not a child forced into labour as a nurse as I first thought when I started on this hobby. Look around for possible relatives who may have passed the child to the couple to look after. |

Just to throw a spanner in the works ... ... as well as ''nurse child'' (fostered child) I've come across girls as young as this definitely in service, sometimes alongside an older sister, listed as ''nurse'' (nurserymaid/nanny). I'm sure they were in service because the relationship to head of household is given as servant. Linda :o) |

Well, yes thats true, though very unusual. Janet, does the household shes in as a Nurse child look like it would be wealthy enough to afford servants? Are there any other servants - what is her relationship shown as. |
