I've got a couple of rellies like that in my tree,if it wasn't for me talking to my cousin, I would never have know that my Great aunt went by her middle name! So I would have spent hours or years looking for the wrong name. As this was my Nans mum I was nieve enough to believe that was her full name. I have so much to learn!!! :)

I had been looking for my mother in laws elder sister, May Rigby in Liverpool - no luck. Speaking to hubbys 91 year old auntie yesterday on phone - told her, couldnt find May anywhere. Oh, she said, her name was Mary Ann - she hated it so much she even put May on her marriage certificate. So simple, eh.

If it was me, I would be trying the Lambeth birth cert (maybe with checking point of the dad's name)......at least it's the right county! Maybe she just hated the name Doris. My gran hated her mother, Jane, so much she disowned her, telling everyone she was her step-mother. When I was born I was given the name ''Sarah Jane'' by my parents. When I grew up, I would tease my mum about her choosing the name Jane when there was so much controversy with this name in her family!! When I began my research my great-granny, Jane, was my first brick wall. It took five years to discover her name at birth (but nowhere else) was Sarah Jane!!!!!!!!! LOL My gran would be spinning in her grave to know that her granddaughter was named the very same as her hated mother! So the point of that ramble is, you don't know her name wasn't Doris! Merry

Thanks for looking John I don't think she had Doris in her name......it's just Mary Lowe.

All I know about James is that he was a Labourer..............so I don't have much to go on? I have been looking through the 1901 census but................I don't know where he was born or how old he was. I thought if Icould find her birth I would be able to get her mothers name.

Have you been able to find James on the 1901 census, or do you not know enough about him? What was his occupation? Merry

It must be me, but I'm confused!!!!!! Is this right: The birth cert you bought was for Bethnal Green. The death cert said she was born Southwark. I take it the two dates of birth were not similar? Merry

Julie Report 15 Jun 2006 11:55

The entry I bought was Mary Ann Lowe, Bethnal Green, Jan,Feb,Mar 1904 1c132.......This one has the wrong Father on it. I have her Marriage cert so I know her Father's name is James. Also my Mum thought that she was born in march. The birth cert I got says that, that Mary was born in December!!......................I got her death cert today, so thats how I now know her full birth date.

Merry

Merry Report 15 Jun 2006 11:51

What are the index details of the birth cert you DID buy? Merry

Merry

Merry Report 15 Jun 2006 11:48

The death cert you have......I take it that also shows her date of birth? The same as on the birth cert or not?? Merry

My Great Grandmother Mary Lowe was born on the 3/3/1904 in Southwark. I thought i'd found her birth entry (this was before I got her death cert today!!) and it had her down as born in Bethnal Green Wich could have been possible. so after getting the birth cert I knew I had the wrong Mary!! I have just done another search for her on 1837 and she isn't there??!! Could anyone help me to find her birth entry please?
