Hi all. Can anyone tell me how to search a census by address rather than by name, please? Victoria.

I think the 1881 is the only one on Ancestry that has the option to search on address in the search box.

1861 and 1891 - Use 1837online 1901 - Use TNA census (available through this site) 1881 - free on Ancestry with address search 1841, 1851 and 1871 try using Historic Directories website to look up people living in the street and then search for those with unusual names on Ancestry. For most of the above there are ways of getting around paying for anything, so long as you have an ancestry sub!! Merry

Merry - Is there a way of using 1837online without paying, with an Ancestry sub?

Well, it's not completely easy, but simpler than not using it!! 1) look up the address on 1837. 2) when you get the results list, note down the schedule number(s) and the civil and ecclesiastical parish names. Then go to Ancestry 1) click the right census at the bottom left of the main search page. 2) select the correct County, Parish/town etc, until you get the list of districts. 3) If there are a lot (like yesterday when I did this for Southwark!)......then try every other ''Description of District'' page. You are looking to find the correct ecclesiastical parish name (each one tends to cover several enumeration districts, so there's no need to check every one) 4) Once you have hit on a description page showing the correct ecclesiastical parish and you have sorted out which adjoining districts are also covered by the same ecclesiastical parish then.... 5) View the actual District pages......but you don't have to view every sheet as you have the schedule number from 1837online!! 6) Yesterday the address I was searching was schedule number 74. This turned out to be on page 11 or 12 in every district I looked in!!! 7) Typing this has taken nearly as long as to do it all!! It sounds bad, but isn't really. Merry

Hi Merry, I've got almost there, but where does the schedule number appear on the image?

it's the very first column, to the left of the address. Every enumeration district begins with schedule 1 Merry

The schedule number is the property reference. If you are looking at the image it is the number to the extreme left of the page,a different one for each household. It is where you would expect to see an address written . Glen

Click on whichever census you want on the front page. Then it gives options for Person Search or Address Search......... Merry
