sylvia i agree with jim that the 1851 and 1861 family are the same and they do fit with your other dates as merry said different combinations of names - sarah jane - emma jane - i suppose it just depends on who is answering the numerators questions. i have an aunt who was margaret / maggie and then polly and that threw me. love linda x

Hi Lindy, I found these. William Newsam 1848 Mar. V.3 P 3 Brentford Ellen Newsam 1850 Jun. V 3 P5 I think Ellen must have died as she is not on any census after 1851 Sylvia. Sorry, these are older sibs, not younger. Ooops.

I must say many, many thanks to everyone for the help you have given. This genealogy is a funny old business. I have lived in Hammersmith for over 30 years and only found out yesterday that my Gtgrandparents married in the local church here. I can see the spire from my window! I was born miles away, in Brighton. Are we subconciously drawn back to our roots? Good hunting everyone, Sylvia.

it's possible, esp as ''Emma Jane'' is a sort of ''known combination''. My ancestor was ''Jane'' everywhere from age 3 (on a census) through more censuses, two marriages, 20 years in an asylum, death and burial. But her birth cert name was Sarah. Another known combination - Sarah Jane, which just happenes to be my name! Merry

Thank you Merry, I have double checked indexes on ancestry and 1837 to make sure. I will do as you suggest. Laura thank you but it`s not her, she was born in Brentford. Their is however an Emma Newsham b. Brentford at the right time and I wondered if they changed her name after registering. Is this plausible? Sylvia

When ordering certs from the GRO, always use the spelling used in the index, even if it is wrong (if you are looking at transcribed indexes, such as FreeBMD, always check the actual page too). Then if there is any altercation when they come to send the cert, the ball will be in your court as you ordered as per their indexes! Merry

I want to get my Gtgrandmas birth cert but cant find her registered. Jane Newsham c1853 name is Newsham on marriage and fathers name also Newsham. I`ve decided to get one of the younger siblings birth certs to get MMN. However, they are both registered as Newsam. Should I use the surname given even though the parents names may be spelt differently? Will this cause a prob. with GRO? Many thanks Sylvia.
