2 Q's one about GR and one about military records.

First Question. I have a pair of relies that married but were both widow/ers. I tried to enter the previous partners into my tree but it keeps sticking on or other of the first partners in the middle of the original pair. Any way I can fix this? Second question. . My Great Grandad was in WWI or 'The Great War' as it was then know. My mother said he was 'Mentioned in Despaches' for doing something heroic and she thought it was kinda like getting a medal. Any Idea if it's possible to search any database's for people that were MID? Ta Helen

Helen, Can't answer your first question, but may be able to comment on your second. It may be that the MID is contained in his military records - which, if he was British and discharged before 1921, will be at the Public Records Office in Kew. Regs Annie

Thanks for that tip annie... darn i had a friend looking stuff up in kew just a month ago and I had not even begun then lol. Do they do lookups for people who can't get there in person?

Hello Helen You might be able to find out about your relative's commendation in 'The London Gazette'. The website has a full search facility so you can search by surname for any period. One of my relatives was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal - and I was able to find out why he got it - 'for acting with fine pluck' no less! It took me a while to get used to searching the site - but I got there in the end. Good luck with your search Karen

Helen, Yes, they do offer some kind of look-up service - not sure if it's via researchers which can be quite expensive (see other threads here about it). I seem to recall someone managing to get Solders' Records of something like £25 - which if you're miles away, is jolly good value. Annie PS: We all start researching too late !!!

In answer to your first question, I think it is just a funny way that GR displays the tree but it sounds as thought you are doing it right. And for the second, I would say look in the London Gazette too. Kate.

If you download his Medal Index Card from the National Archives site, it should note whether he was Mentioned in Despatches (MID), you can then check the Medal Roll at Kew for more details.
