Could some one look if they have time an entry of birth to help me decipher the writing. I am looking for an Isabella Nichols born about 1848. I looked at an entry on Ancestry 1848 J.F.M quarter think it says X1 154 but cannot read the name of the place I am looking for Bristol but not sure if it reads that. Gwen

From 1837 to 1851 the district number for Bristol is XI From 1852 to 1930 the district number is 6a Will have a look at the image but based on the above (from Genuki) Bristol would be correct. Glen

Gwen! Stop! You cant order from a local RO using the GRO reference, the local Ros do not have them, they use their own references. Good news is though, that usually a name and a year are sufficient for a loca RO to find the right cert. Good luck Olde Crone

Thanks for that did realise though as I have been applying to all the local offices as it would appear to be quicker than the GRO at the minute. Sent to Cardiff for a few they were back within a few days. Hope Bristol proves to be that quick. Thanks everyone for your input. Gwen

I thought Bristol was in Gloucestershire, on the 1851 census it says Somerset does any one know if it was then. Gwen

I think it was Gloucestershire in the 1850's too. Was it just the enumerator who put Somerset, or was it at the top of the page on the typed discription of the place? Kath. x

so sorry about the delay in replying but was thrown off the computer for a while kids who have em. Not sure really the family have put Bristol and it looks like Somerset has been added in black, so could be a mistake.
