I have been on here to ask about this family before. Everyone was so helpful with their suggestions. I am still struggling with them, I feel like giving up. My problem is as follows:- I have a marriage certificate for my great grandmother dated the 27th June 1905. On it it says Mary Ellen Cosgrove, age 21. Address, Edmund Street. Father, Peter Cosgrove, Deceased, plumber. I have ordered 3 birth certificates that could have been hers but they weren't. As her marriage certificate doesnt say were she was born I cant narrow it to any area. I have a feeling she could have been born in Liverpool (this is were her marriage took place). I have looked on census but cant find a Mary Ellen Cosgrove with a father Peter. Is there any way I could find out if Mary added the name Ellen later on or is there something else I could do to locate her. Any help would be appreciated

Hi If you can't find Mary Ellen in the 1901 census, have you tried looking for her father in earlier census, say 1891 or 1881? (ie: a Peter Cosgrove who IS a plumber). There is a Mary with a father of Peter in 1901 living in Liverpool but he's not a plumber (he's listed as a dock worker) sometmes, especially if they are dead and cannot contradict it, their occupation could become 'inflated' if they wanted to make themselves look posher. Also, just because someone is listed as 'only' Mary on the census doesn't mean to say they weren't christened/named Mary Ellen. Snowdrops

Thankyou for your help I will try looking for a Mary on the census. I even thought of checking the address on the marriage certificate but it keeps coming up unable to find.

According to Freebmd, there is only one Mary Ellen which is listed above If this is here, obviously she won;t be on the 1881, so you need to find her on 1891 & 1901 (by which time she could have been working away from home) Elly
