Thanks for those suggestions - but guess what? Says yes born in county and there is a mark in the column for born in Scotland/Ireland etc!!! Census was at Maria Street, Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets. I doubt if this family would made any wills though. Subsequent generations were labourers and charwomen. There are three possibly baptisms for James in roughly the right areas the family to moved to and fro to. I cannot make out his profession. If any kind soul would take a look at the 1841 census for me to discipher the profession I would be very grateful. HO 107/705/2. (William Bateman, wife Jane). Best regards, Selena |

You say you have him on the 1841 census? - Was he born In the County? That could reduce the options a bit. Christine |

I was very lucky in that sort of context. My husband's Gx3-g-father was married 3 times (4 if you count marrying his Gx3-g-mother twice!). Twice at Spitalfields and once at St John, Wapping. He had a distinctive name so I was confident when I found the 3rd marriage in 1842 - and his occupation was right. Being so late on, it had his father's name. You can sometimes get round things by finding out where other bits of the family are - his children visiting grandparents at census time, say. What did James Batemen do for a living? Can you find him in the archives? A Will might solve your problem. Christine |

A kind member looked it up at the LMA as follows: James William John Bateman of this parish, bachelor, and Jane Louisa Johnson of this parish, spinster, were married in this Church by Banns with consent of this eighteenth Day of August in the Year One thousand eight hundred and thirty-four By me William Stone Rector. This Marriage was solemnized between us { James W John Bateman { Jane Louisa Johnson her X mark In the Presence of { Richard Johnson { Robert Root* * witnessed many marriages at that church There are several baptisms for James Bateman on the IGI but without his fathers name I don't know how to go backwards or find siblings. I have the 1841 info where James called himself William. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, Selena |
