Does anyone know if Crowle and Billingham in Lincs are close together? Victoria.

Lincolnshire has Bassingham Beckingham Benington Billingborough Billinghay and Bullington No Billingham

Theres a Burringham not far from Crowe could it be this place instead? These are both near Scunthorpe.

The only Billingham I managed to find on the Map sites was in the Middlesborough area. Is the spelling correct? Crowle is just west of Scunthorpe. If you enter a town name in the seach box of Multimap you'll get a map of the area (or possible choices if there is more thn one town of the same name) Good Luck Kevin

Crowle is about 7 miles West of Scunthorpe. Billinghay (most likely match) is between Sleaford and Coningsby,about 50 miles from Crowle by road.It is though quite close to the River Witham which heads into Lincoln and then to the Fossdyke and the River Trent,which heads to Scunthorpe. If it's Beckingham then there are several choices, one east of Newark,again close to the Trent (40 miles by road) one lies just west of Gainsborough on the Trent (20 miles by road). Both of these though are really classed as Notts. Glen

Oh - that's a shame! I'm trying to identify someone on a census who had previously said he was from Crowle but then says Billinghay. I was hoping they'd be next door to each other and he used them interchangeably, but it's not that likely if they're 50 miles apart, is it?

If this is on a census, I have found a couple of instances where the place of birth has changed. this is generally because most of the family are all from the same place and the 'odd one out' simply gets lumped in with the majority.

My g-g-father swapped between Ilford and Maidenhead as PoB on the censuses. It turned out that he was born in the Ilford area, but brought up near Maidenhead. I reckon the enumerators didn't always ask the question ''where were you born?'', but substituted something like ''where do you come from?''. Christine
