Id suggest you phone the registry office where the certificate would have been issued. I had a similar thing a few weeks back when i tried to order my brothers D/C he had died at just a few weeks old in the mid 60s. I did have to explain my relationship but Poole Reg Off sent me the certificate the next morning. Sue

Valerie I'm not sure how strictly they stick to this rule, but I'm pretty sure the 50-year rule on birth certs is to avoid identity theft. That's why the same rules don't apply for marriage and death certs. Hope you manage to get the info you need somehow though. Mandy :)

I've not tried getting recent ones but if it's a close relative they may be more co-operative, but thay could also ask you to find out the DoB from the person first. It's not uncommon for older people (that sound wrong in the wording) not to know when their birthday is - my great aunt thought she was over 6 months older than she was because her mover lied to get her a job after leaving school. Just remember some local register offices (mainly London areas) don't do certs for genealogy perposes.

it might depend on who the certificate relates to but local record offices might be more helpful and far quicker (Usually under a week I've found)

Certs GRO despatch date the 28th June , not too bad. I just tried to order a Birth cert but because she was born within the last 50 years it kept asking me for her birth date, is there a way around this thanks, I am sure I got a couple before without filling in that box
