What is a nurse child?

I am looking up George Kiff b1860 Little amwell on the 1871 census. He is there with his mother sarah. His father must had died. They have a grandson burgess there and william brace, a 1 yo nurse child...what is a nurse child?

Nurse child = what we would today call a Foster child. Hope that helps? OC
